Respirable crystalline silica: the rules that changed drilling

What it is

Crystalline silica occurs naturally in concrete, brick, stone, mortar, tile and engineered stone. Cutting, grinding and drilling these materials produces respirable particles small enough to reach deep lung tissue.

Exposure is associated with silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. The damage is cumulative and irreversible.

The regulatory shape

Most industrialised jurisdictions now set an occupational exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica and require employers to assess and control exposure.

The control hierarchy consistently places engineering controls — capture at source, water suppression — above respiratory protective equipment. RPE is the last layer, not the first.

What this means for drilling

Drilling concrete without controls is a recognised high-exposure task. On-tool extraction is the standard engineering control.
