Setting up dust extraction

A hose connected to the wrong extractor captures very little of what matters.

Choose the right extractor

Use a dust extractor rated for fine construction dust with the appropriate filter class. A general workshop vacuum passes the respirable fraction — the part that actually harms you — straight through and back into the room.

Connect before you drill

Attach to the dust port before starting. Capture works at the moment dust is created; there is no catching up afterwards.

Maintain airflow

Empty containers and clean or change filters regularly. A loaded filter kills airflow, and airflow is the mechanism.

Check the hose for blockages, especially after drilling damp material.

It is a control, not a cure

Local exhaust ventilation is one layer. Depending on task and duration you may still need RPE. See silica dust rules.

Questions about this

Will any vacuum work?

No. A general workshop vacuum passes the respirable fraction through its filter and back into the room. Use an extractor rated for fine construction dust with the correct filter class.

Why does my extraction seem to get worse during the day?

Almost always a loading filter or a full container. Capture depends on airflow, and airflow falls as the filter blinds.
