Depth Control & Anchor Embedment: Why 145 mm Matters for ETA-Approved Fixings
Anchor capacity is not a property of the steel. It is a property of the hole — and the hole's depth is the number most often wrong.

Effective embedment, not drilled depth
European Technical Assessments (ETAs) and ICC-ES reports qualify post-installed anchors at a stated effective embedment (hef), measured from the surface of the structural base material — concrete itself, not screed, tile, render or paint.
A hole drilled 90 mm into the floor may provide only 60 mm of effective embedment if 30 mm of finishes were counted. That anchor, even if otherwise installed correctly, is below its approval and below the design assumption.
Effective depth must be measured after subtracting non-structural layers and after cleaning. Adhesive anchors need a dust-free wall for bond; a deep but dusty hole is not a correct hole.
How much error matters
For mechanical expansion anchors, capacity is dominated by friction and bearing against the wall. A hole a few millimetres shallow can prevent the cone from expanding to its qualified position, collapsing pull-out strength disproportionately.
For bonded anchors, capacity scales with bonded area — essentially embedment times perimeter. A 10 mm deficit in a 90 mm embedment removes roughly 11% of bonded area directly, before accounting for the uncleaned bottom zone where dust pools.
Too deep is also a defect: adhesive is wasted, cure geometry is wrong, and a through-drill can blow out the soffit. Precision in both directions matters.
The depth stop as a quality control
A machine-set depth stop removes operator judgement — the dominant source of embedment variance in field studies. VACDRILL's adjustable stop caps usable depth at 145 mm and can be set for any shallower approval, with repeatability of about ±1 mm.
Procedure: set the stop against the anchor gauge, lock it, drill to the stop, clean per the anchor's published cycle, then set the anchor. Do not chase depth by feel.
Because the pad defines the surface plane, depth is measured normal to the surface even when the operator's stance is not. Hand-held drilling cannot guarantee that without a collar or jig.
